This formula tonifies Kidney-Yang, nourishing Blood and tonifying and raising Qi. Thus, there are symptoms of Kidney-Yang deficiency, Blood deficiency and Qi deficiency.
This formula is based a number of herbs which, apart from having the above actions, also calm the foetus. These are:
- Tu Si Zi
- Xu Duan
- Du Zhong
- Sha Ren and
- Huang Qin
Note this formula is not aimed at preventing a miscarriage in a pregnant woman, but at correcting the spiritual conditions that might lead to miscarriage in a woman with a history of miscarriages, before she becomes pregnant.

- Dang Gui Shen Dong, Shu Di Huang and Gou Qi Zi nourish Blood
- Ren Shen, Bai Zhu and Shan Yao tonify Qi

- Sheng Ma, in combination with Huang Qi, raises Qi
- Huang Qin clears Heat (to counter balance the hot Yang tonics)
