- Shan Zhu Yu, Nu Zhen Zi, Han Lian Cao, Sheng Di Huang, Gou Qi Zi, Shan Yao and Huang Jing nourish Kidney-Yin and the Essence and strengthen the Directing and Penetrating vessels
- Yi Mu Cao invigorates Blood
- Ba Ji Tian and Tu Si Zi tonify Kidney-Yang and nourish the Essence
These herbs are added for the same reasons that Kidney-Yin tonics are added to a Yang-tonifying formula. Going back to the simile of the oil lamp, if we increase the oil ( =Yin) too much it may smother the flame (=Yang). It is therefore necessary to boost the flame slightly as we increase the oil, hence the addition of two Kidney-Yang tonics to this formula. Fu Ling Kuai was added resolve Dampness and counterbalance the cloying nature of the Yin tonics.
